Where to Eat and Drink in Taupo

The best places to eat and drink, according to us.

Despite being a relatively small town in the North Islands geographical centre, Taupo has food that’s up there with places like Auckland or Queenstown, and has the kind of variety suited for any occasion.

There’s plenty to eat in the Central Town, but a lot can also be found in surrounding neighborhoods like Acacia Bay, 2 Mile Bay, and Rainbow Point. And while you can certainly go all-in on fine dining, these days a lot of the more interesting local spots are casual and relaxed, focused on family-style menus or small plates or things to share. And then you have the cafes. Taupo is a resort town, but unlike our Queenstown cousins “coffee shops” are unheard of – cafes are almost always locally serviced affairs with full menus with actually-exciting things to eat. Competition is fierce, which means you’re more likely to get great food at a reasonable price.

With over 50 restaurants to choose from in Taupo it can be hard to know what’s good and what’s not. Here’s the top few according to us.

BRUNCH & LUNCH

Further up Mapara Road you will find L’arte Cafe, this offers great food. In town be sure to try Baku, Replete, Storehouse and Sun-court Sushi.

GASTRO PUBS

Be sure to try our Acacia Bay local – The Bay Bar and Brasserie for friendly, relaxed atmosphere and tasty food. In town we recommend Plateau.

FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

There’s delicious Italian at Osteria or Dixie Brown offers a wide range of American style options.

DATE NIGHT

For something a little more special head to Vine Eatery, The Brantry or The Bistro.

Dave & Amy’s Dark-horse

For us, our best kept secret has to be Gourmet Pizza at the Two Mile Bay Sailing Clubit gets the nod for its rustic charm, amazing views, warm and friendly service and food with gluten free options. Dig in!
